This is quite an old thread, but still relevant since BC on-prem is still used in some scenarios.

Key points to consider for Business Central on-prem:

    • Still valid for control-heavy environments
If there are strict data residency, compliance, or internal IT policies, on-prem makes sense.
    • More control, more responsibility
You handle infrastructure, backups, upgrades, performance. No automatic updates like SaaS.
    • Customization flexibility
Easier to manage certain deep customizations compared to SaaS restrictions, especially in legacy NAV-to-BC transitions.
    • Upgrade complexity
This is the biggest drawback. Moving between versions (especially from older NAV) requires planning, testing, and sometimes code refactoring.
    • Integration limitations vs SaaS
Cloud services (Power Platform, AI, etc.) are easier and more native with SaaS.

    In current trend:
Most new implementations go SaaS unless there’s a strong reason not to.

So on-prem is still valid, but usually chosen for constraints, not as a first preference anymore.
