  It depends.
  
  If you have an upgrade codeunit, and in it you have a function defining synchronisation rules, and in it you have a line saying that some large table shoud be copied to another temp table then yes, NST will make a copy of the table as told.
  
  Schema sync may also take long time if you add a field to a large table, or add or modify an index on it.

  Regarding "Schema sync may also take long time if you add a field to a large table, or add or modify an index on it.", we made optimizations in NAV2018 that utilize ONLINE operations on SQL Server (if you run on an edition that supports that). Some sync operations in NAV2018 also do ALTER TABLE renames instead of CREATE/COPY DATA/DROP.
