Difference Between Global & Shortcut Dimensions

Can someone tell me what is the major difference between Global & Short cut dimensions? As per my understanding, The global dimension values are available as part of the Table so that you can use them in reports as fields and for short cut dimensions, you can view the values only thru Analysis by dimension reports?

Please confirm whether my understanding is correct?

    The Global Dimension Information is directly stored in G/L entry table.
    The shortcut dimensions are stored in Ledger Entry Dimensions table.

    The global Dimension is directly stored in G/L, and also in Ledger entry Dim Table...
    Be carefull on any after posting update process...changing the values (what you should not, but users may ask/force you to do) of Global dimensions should be done on both levels!

    Global dimensions used as filters for G/L entries, as well as on all reports, Account schedules & batch jobs.

    short cut dimensions user can enter dimensions & dimensions values directly on the lines in journals & sales & purchase documents.
