ODBC and MSOffice 97

I have to get data using Excel with MSQuery through ODBC and set criterion on field Date (expl.:less than 99.01.01). But i always receive error message 'Syntax error' (invalid driver). Then i don't set this criterion i receive data. With MSOffice 2000 is all ok. How can i solve this problem (without using MSOffice 2000)?
