Proper procedure to update a Balance field on the Customer c

What is the proper procedure to update a Balance field on the Customer card (Balance field is new stored field - not a flowfield). when Video rental is created (I.E. Sales Invoice) and client want customer card update (using standard methodology).
I would like reference to available book please.
