Reportdesign: logic between different Data Items

Hello,
I created a report with 3 data items where every data item is linked to the one above:

Sites
--Doors
----Installed base

Now our users tried to set a selection on the last data item, the installed base. The problem is that when the installed base does not fall into this selection the site and the door will be displayed anyway.
Is there an easy way to give the selection on an data item back to the data item above?

My idea was to create flow fields on the sites table which counts the number of installed bases per site with a defined selection. Then we can select on this flowfield. Would there be an easier way to solve that?

Set the propertie "PrintOnlyIfDetail" in the dataitems "Sites" and "Doors", so they will not printed if there are no details in dataitem "Installed base".
