Application Errors

I've searched the forum but couldn't find a clear answer, so I'm writing this comment. 'even though “application method” field is set as “apply to oldest” in customer and vendor cards, payment and invoice transactions dont automatically apply to each other.' i am getting error. What could be the source of this problem and is there a solution you can suggest?
