CP 3.70++ Using Item Variants

In Commerce Portal you only can sell Items, but Commerce Server allows you to
sell Variants of Items. Many of our customers have a product cataloge that
contains Item Variants but they cannot use Navision Commerce Portal without
mass customization around the synchronisation of their product cataloge into
the Commerce Portal. The consequence: The ability for smart and not even too
expensive updates to newer versions will be lost.

Does anyone of you have experience with such reqirements that should be part
of the "standard" functionality of Commerce Portal?

Has anybody heared about the future of this product?
