Is it safe to run NT's Defrag Utility on a Navision Server?
Is it advisable?

I don't see any issues in using it. I use it quite often with SQL server. I would just follow these 2 suggestions:

    1. Backup database before defrag. (a system failure during defrag can corrupt the data)

    2. Stop Navision database service during defrag.
There are no bugs - only undocumented features.

Could we please keep the tricks and tips section for tips and tricks? There are enough other forums for posting questions.

    Hi,
The technologies definitely changes and improved sine the last post of this thread.

I would like to know what other good De fragmentation tools you use for defragmenting Native databases with more than 30 GB in size. I see that Windows 2003 server defragment tool doesn't defagment large file.

    Any recommendations, please?

    My preference is to
    Create a backup
    shut down the server,
move the database files somewhere else
    format the drives
    move the files back.

I generally find that copy is much faster than any defrag software.

The more important question is, why did the drives get fragmented. If you are running Navision properly, then the drives cant become fragmented. So may be better is to work out what was done wrong BEFORE you fix it.

    My favourite is JKDefrag (http://www.kessels.com/Jkdefrag/)

    - Small & fast
    - has command-line & screensaver (!!) version
    - deframents virtually everything
    - FREE :)

Speaking about defragmentation - have a look on Contig (http://www.sysinternals.com) - defragmens MFT, registry files, etc.
