Search Engine - 1 Character at a Time

In NAV 2009 R2 I created a search engine which could say look through customer names, addresses, etc., one character at a time. I was able to do this as a Form had a Property called AutoEnter and the Field was only a Text of one. This allowed me to type in say C and automatically I could look for all customers with a C in the name or address.
This AutoEnter is no longer a Property on Pages in NAV 2018 – has anybody found an alternative solution or know of an Automation, DotNet, routine that will allow recording of keyboard strikes one at a time and reporting back to NAV – ideally one that recognises the Backspace character too?
