Increasing length of serial no. field NAV 2018

Hi,
We have ran into an issue with a customer about to go live. They have serial numbers with 36 chars in their old system. NAV has 20.
An old post about it exists, but with no solution, other than to talk the customer out of it. https://forum.mibuso.com/discussion/21936/easiest-way-to-change-field-length

Of course we are not about to change length of all serial no fields, references, variables, etc in NAV. But what is the best workaround?
Customer needs to be able to enter numbers on sales lines, search for numbers etc.

    To solve this we made a new code, then we show that in the page need and bring data similar when you use nº

    We thought of that solution, and that is the best workaround we have found yet.
    On sales/purchase/journal lines it should be pretty straightforward to add new field to show and lookup NAV sn from our custom field. What about searching sn's how can that work?
