2009R2 Web Services without NTLM?

The customer still uses 2009R2, An update to a current version is planned for next year. We currently are trying to provide a web service so that some external hardware device (scales) can talk to it. The service is running and I tested it by using SoapUI. Only thing is: Authentication only works via NTLM - and our hardware provider seems to have problems with SOAP authentication via NTLM.
Is there any way to do it in another way? I searched the web, but had only found instruction for 2013 and higher.
