No, I don't know any other options. I guess something may exist out there - after all the guy who wrote the Redemption library managed to do this somehow without Outlook.
But seriously consider the Redemption library. It is rock-solid and really inexpensive (at least it was a few years back when we purchased it). It will save you time and efforts, and money. The license is one-off, no user limits, with support lasting a year - which is enough to iron any wrinkles in the code. You don't have to pay yearly maintenance - although in my view it is money well spent, and the guy is well worth supporting him in form of a yearly maintenance fee.
I am 'advertising' it here as I was really pleased with the help received from the Dmitry (the author), with library performance, and available features.
You can do the same (or even more) with Outlook Redemption library. I was using it myself to do a bit more advanced Outlook integration in older NAV versions.
It works very well, I dare to say much better than Outlook Object Model objects. It is very friendly priced too.
