We have assembly management, how to implement subcontracting (or some practical workarounds)?

Hello,
We just started using NAV 2017 (upgraded from 3.7) and enjoying the benefits of assembly management which fits our operation so much better than manufacturing. And we love the natural integration with sales orders.
However, we sometimes send out some of our items to a third party to be painted in a different color.
What is the best way of implementing this? My understanding is (wrongly?) that Subcontracting only works with Manufacturing and not Assembly Mgt.

Tx for taking the time to respond. We are working with a developer and before I ask him to start developing I would like to know the possibilities / practical workarounds already existing.
