Option fields in query

Hello,
I am designing a query which retrieves an option field. Is it possible to receive the value of the option field as an integer instead of as text? Now I am getting the translated option value, and I need to convert this back to an option.
I know I can do this by checking the retrieved value against the 'formatted' option value, but somehow this does not feel right to me.
