[SOLVED] NAV 7.0.388 Invalid printer

One user goes to select 'Picking List By Order' which starts report ID 10153

They get a prompt about the '\\printer1' not being a valid printer and it asks to click OK then select a printer from the list

The user does so and is able to select the printer1 from the options and print successfully

All other users don't have this in between warning and printer selection step so I don't think the issue lies within NAV specifically and perhaps with print drivers.

The printer in question is a network printer installed via 'add printer' from the network.

Any insight on next troubleshooting steps would be valuable.

The print driver was reinstalled and the OS is windows 7.

printer1 is selected locally as the 'default printer'

I'm having trouble tracking down a reason why NAV would say the printer is not valid but then have it in the list of valid printers to select from.

Do you have a Printer Selection set for this particular user in NAV?

Hello Mr.Hardin good to see ya here,

The user does have a printer selection set for the report ID 0 under IT Admin -> General -> Printer Selection.

The printer listed here is the very '\\printer1'. The same printer that NAV says is invalid.

To make matters more interesting when I go to add a test printer selection option under 'Printer Selection' for a different user I don't see '\\printer1' available to select.

This is a long shot - open a CMD window for that user and type NET USE. Post the output as a reply.

Excellent - no printers. Just trying to figure out where it is getting \\printer1 from. This sounds like a stuck printer definition.

Is it possible to remove every printer defined on this PC - every one - and then see what NAV does?

To further clarify I'm using '\\printer1\ as a stand in for the actual printer name for brevity's sake.

    The printer name is '\\PrintServer.Address.com\Canon iR3225 PCL5e'

I will attempt to remove all printers from the box and see how NAV responds next.

    Update:

I removed all the print drivers and nav told me that I needed to have a print installed to perform print functions.

I tried adding the network printer via the wizard in 'add/remove devices' I also tried adding the printer by entering the TCP IP address and selecting a driver from the windows list.

The printer works in all cases but within NAV I'm still getting the 'printer is invalid message' After getting it one can select the very printer from the 'print selection page' and it prints just fine.

My goal is to eliminate that extra selection step and the invalid printer message.

While you had all of the printers removed, did you try installing a "local" printer? Something that doesn't involve the network at all? Then NAV would have only had a single local print queue to work with.

    SOLVED -

turns out the shared name of the network printer did not match the file path stored in NAV under printer selections -> printer name.

    The original error:
'\\ThePrinterYouWant' is not a valid printer. Yet the printer I wanted was still there to select from in print preferences.

    The fix:
verify the share name on the network printer and go to Departments -> Administration -> General -> Printer Selections -> 'double click on the user\printer\report ID combo you need and alter the 'Printer Name' by selecting the correct path.

    cheers
