What is the application level use of XMLPorts (object) in NAV 2016?

"XMLports enable you to import data received in XML format to the Microsoft Dynamics NAV database and export data in XML format from the Microsoft Dynamics NAV database." - This is what I saw in MSDN and Microsoft Partner source site (video tutorials). What I need to know is the practical application of XML Ports.
Does this object have any relation with integration of ISV?

You can use it for importing any data from xmlports to databases.
also used for exporting and importing data to/from webservices from other applications.

Also, despite the name, XMLports can also be used to import / export other types of data such as fixed length files and comma / TAB delimited files, I.e. they are not just used for XML files.
