Ignore special characters in search query

We have a requirement in NAV 2016 to ignore special characters while searching for records. Eg: if the item No. is '123.456/001' and user enters '123456001' while searching it should still return the record with value '123.456/001'.

Probably would be fastest to create a new automatically updated field which contains the Item No. without the special characters and run the query against the new field.
