The Routing Link Code on Production Order Routing Line is not editable

There are a number of occasions where we need to add an ad-hoc routing line to a production order, however the Routing Link Code on Production Order Routing Line is not editable which then causes issues.
The only way around this is by using SQL to populate the field which is not good practice. Does anyone know how to populate this field without making it editable?
