SETFILTER(variable,value) how do it?

Here is my code

IF Table.FIND('-') THEN
BEGIN
DoSomething()
Total.SETFILTER(Table."FieldName",Value);
DoSomething()
UNTIL Total.NEXT=0

I try also this , but It didn't work

RecRef.OPEN(total);
FldRef:=RecRef.FIELDINDEX(Table."Field ID");
Total.SETFILTER(FldRef,Value);


Is this possible to set a filter on variable instead on field.
RecRef typ isn't the same what are field type?
