NAV 2016 cu1 client does not run on terminal server

tinoruijstinoruijs Member Posts: 1,226
Hi,

Strange problem here. I've installed NAV 2016 cumulative update 1 on a navision-server. Installed the client too on that server. It opens fine.
Now when I install the client on the terminal server the installation seems succesfull, but when I start the client it crashes.
In event viewer there's a ".NET runtime"-error.

Description:
Application: Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Client.exe

Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: System.IO.FileLoadException

at Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Client.Program.Main(System.String[])

First I thought the problem was a blocked downloaded file, but after deinstalling and installing un unblocked cu1, the error still exists.
Restart did not work.
So eventually deinstalled cu1 and installed the first release again.
Now it's working again.
De terminal server is a Windows Server 2008 R2.

At another customer cu1 works fine on all servers and pc's.

Could it be a Windows Server 2008 R2 problem? Yes, it could off course, but anyone experienced this too perhaps?

It sure looks like blocked problem. Did you check, after installing of unblocked cu1, for possible blocked dlls still exists in installation folder? Also, is it mentioning what file couldn't be loaded?

Wild guess: Maybe you need to install it in terminal server mode.

Same problem here with a Windows 10 client. How did you get the previous version working with the middle tier upgraded to CU1?

No, I didn't check. Just now I checked and yes, there are still blocked files in the installation folder despite I unblocked the cu1-file.
    Strange.
Another strange thing is that I succeeded to install the client on two pc's at customer site.
On other pc's in the same network the client crashes.
So there must be a setting on a pc or server which determines if blocked files causes problems or not.
I'm now going to try unblocking every file in the installation folder.

I don't know what terminal server mode is. But considering my previous post, I guess this won't solve the problems on the pc's.

I deinstalled the middle tier service and installed the first release of NAV 2016.

So I downloaded cu1 again and unblocked the file.
Checked the dvd if it was blocked. It wasn't.
Then unzipped the dvd and checked several files if they were blocked. They weren't.

I've succeeded installing and opening the client on 1 Windows 7 Professional pc, but on another Windows 7 professional pc the client crashes.
I used same installation folder. Both setup's "run as administrator". But 64-bit pc's.
    Same domain.
    Same service pack 1 installed.
Same Microsoft .NET Framework installed: 4.5.2.

Did you install all files in their default paths? Do you use server based Userprofiles?

Yes the files are installed in the default path.
I'm not the system administrator, so I don't know if server based user profiles are used.
Do you think user profiles could be a problem?

Eventualiy the software has no rights to use his addons, which are normaly donloaded from the Servicetier, or the Personalistionstore.xml or Config- files could not be loaded.
Are there any messages in the Eventlog of the Servicetier?
  • PhennoPhenno Member Posts: 630
Just to be clear, do you install NAV from the shared folder or local folder?
  • tinoruijstinoruijs Member Posts: 1,226
There are messages in the eventlog, but they concern the different version between client and server which I tested.
So nothing about the crash of some clients unfortunatly.

You say downloaded from the servicetier. Maybe I could check the files on the server if they are unblocked.

Files are all unblocked. So that's ok.

All right. I've got an answer from the NAVTeam:
    Hello Tino,
This is a known issue for the Dynamics NAV Windows client and OneNote 2010. The next cumulative update will include a fix for the problem. Until then, we recommend that you uninstall OneNote 2010 from the client computer, or you can upgrade to a later version of OneNote, of course.

I've tested it on 1 pc and deinstalling OneNote 2010 did the trick.

    Thanks everybody for the help!

Thank you very much Tino for your solution post.
This helped us with an upgrade issue, where the client would crash, but also where Nav Admin Tool would fail to start with an error. Uninstalled OneNote 2010, and all is working now.

Has there been a resolution to this issue? Is it fixed with a later CU of 2016?
    Thanks.

    And it's still an issue with Nav2016 on Windows Terminal-Server 2012 R2.
Uninstall OneNote 2010 did the trick.

I have the same issue after Installing Business Central in Terminal ''server 2016''. Not sure how to fix this issue. Does this problem occurs in Business Central as well?
