NAV Web Client - Access Over WAN

Hello,
We are trying to configure our system to allow access to the Web client over the internet. Currently when you try to connect you receive a certificate problem message which is expected as we are using a self signed cert. However when you select continue to o site you get the message that the page can't be displayed.

If I then connect our vpn and try again, I get the cert message, but when I continue to site I get prompted for username and password, I enter these and can access NAV. Once NAV is open I am able to disconnect the VPN and continue working. I can even close the session and re-open and NAV will continue to work.

I can only think that it has something to do with displaying the initial login screen.

Can anybody offer any suggestions on how this could be resolved?
