WebServices 2009 - Item code with newline

Hello,
I'm trying to create a transfer document via webservices, but the item code has a newline and carriage return in the code (a result from copy&paste from Excel, when creating the item in question).
I can't get the webservice to accept the item, it keeps getting an exception saying that code 'XYZ' doesn't exist. The newline and CR are at the end of the item code (the item code looks like 'XYZ<CR><LF>').
Googling for this doesn't yield any usefull results.
