NAV2009R2 Tracking packages to vendors for outside service

Currently when we need to send something out to a vendor, such as chroming or any other type of additonal work before the product is complete, we setup a misc package and ship UPS to the vendor. The problem is that when we do this, there is no way to track where something is. If you were to ask how many products are out at other vendors, how long, we really don't know, unless we look at the PO that we gave them to see when it left the building based on the date.
I came across transfer orders. Willl this serve that function? Will it show me where things are?
