Enable quantity for sales description lines

Hello,

Has anybody ever enabled the quantity field for sales lines that have only description (type is blank)?
I'm wondering whether to do this or to create a custom quantity field that updates the standard quantity field automatically.

    Why do you want to do that?

    It's for a sales quote, just for printing reasons. We are grouping several items into a set (line with type blank) and we want to print the quantity for the group line (the amount is the sum of item lines amounts). Of course, we suggested to use assembly but the customer rejected it.

    If it's only for printing reasons, just add a new quantity field. But I wouldn't try to update the standard quantity field automatically. If a customer wants that, you should use sales BOM and explode sales BOM.
    And maybe take a look at extended texts which describes the BOM-item.
