MergeTool question: how to resume merging

Hi,
Trying to find my way around the Mergetool, and have a question in that regard.
During the manual merge process, how do I quit and save my changes in order to be able start the merge later on a the same point I exited?
When I exit the manual merge process and restart it later on, it starts from scratch again.
I can see it is possible to "Insert all in later merging table". That's fine but when that is done, how do I proceed?
