Changing AssistEdit button visual representation

Hi,
maybe you have any ideas how it would be possible to change AssistEdit button style? In 2009R2 we could assign image and AssistEdit button would become as icon. In 2013 R2 I don't find a way to do this. Maybe it is possible to do this from .net, maybe creating add-in if there is possible to hook AssistEdit button to .net?
Or the only possibility is to create a custom AssistEdit add-in which would be associated with specified input fields through control addin property?
