Upgrade from 2009 to 2013R2

Hi,

We have a client that wants to upgrade his current version of Navision to 2013R2
They are currently running version 2009 (6.0.27808.0), classic client on SQL

I am wondering what is the best approach to do this upgrade.
Since they are not on 2009R2 but the first version of 2009, I don't think we can directly upgrade them to 2013R2, am I correct?
Should we start by upgrading to 2009R2 and then 2013R2?
Or go from 2009 to 2013 then 2013R2?

Any input/advice would be appreciated.

Thank you
-Julie

    Yes, look in the upgrade folder on the dvd for the conversion fobs to see what is possible.

    From what I read, there are 2 possibles paths to follow now that there is an upgrade toolkit to go directly from 2009R2 to 2013R2 without going to 2013 first:

    2009 --> 2009R2 --> 2013R2
    2009 --> 2013 --> 2013R2

    Am I wondering which one is the best/easiest/fastest way to go
    What are the reasons to go to 2009R2 as a middle step instead of 2013, or the other way around?

    HI,
    2009 --> 2009R2 --> 2013R2
    2009 --> 2013 --> 2013R2

    From NAV 2009 To 2009 R2 as per my understanding there is no upgrade process (its just the Exe Upgrade).
    - There is no Upgrade Toolkit for NAV 2009 To NAV 2009 R2. You just need to do the Exe Upgrade.

    So there are two ways -
    a) NAV 2009 / NAV 2009 Sp1 / NAV 2009 R2 --- NAV 2013 -- NAV 2013 R2
    b) NAV 2009 / NAV 2009 Sp1 / NAV 2009 R2 -- NAV 2013 R2

    But Even in the Second Step You need to Open the Database in NAV 2013 First.

    As per my understanding the Best Easiest Way to upgrade is Step b.

    Let me know if you still have any doubts.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Saurav Dhyani

    It sounds like you do not have much experience with upgrades.

    They are a special skill, if you expect not to do to many you may consider ousourcing them to an upgrade service center.

    That's the answer to the easiest way to do the project.

    This year did my first 2009R2 -> 2013R2 upgrade.

    Follow this one http://blogs.msdn.com/b/nav/archive/201 ... 13-r2.aspx to convert the data.

    Compare the old base and customer MOD base and implement the modifications in the new source code.

    After this follow the help upgrade instructions if you must convert reports. I would redo them or as Mark says outsource this.

    I don't want to outsource, I want to learn and I need to start somewhere.

    I worked with upgrade toolkits before, just don't have a lot of experience with upgrades and the ones I did were on earlier version, up to 2009.
    I did some research on 2013 R2 upgrades and I saw there was 2 possibles paths so I thought I would ask here for some advice.
    We should be doing a few upgrades to 2013R2 in the next months/year. This is something I want to learn and not outsource somewhere else.

    Thank you mdPartnerNL for your input. I will look into it :)
