Upgrade Finsql.exe without technical upgrade

Represent a partner. One of our customers are still running version 5.0 on sql.
On 2008 R2 Citrix servers they experience a printer error where they get many more copies of documents than they entered in the printer dialog box.
This is fixed in 5.0 SP1, I have tested it in their environment.
Question(s) are,
can I somehow avoid changing anything on the server side?
Can I avoid a technical upgrade?
I tried to connect a 5.0 SP1 client to their 5.0 database, but then I must convert the database and only SP1 can access.
I tried to switch out/upgrade all client files EXCEPT the ndbcs.dll file, and then I was not asked to convert.
Is it safe to run 5.0 SP1 client against a 5.0 ndbcs.dll file and 5.0 database?

Best regards,
Gunnar

Don't think so. Server + Client version must be the same.

Server client should be the same, yes.

Why is it a problem to do a technical upgrade?

I do remember that around these versions MSFT switched to indexed views.

Thank you for the swift reply. The reason for not doing tech. upgrade are just convenience, less downtime for the users. We also of course need to all client at the same time. I assume one need to have single user access to the database in order to do a technical upgrade.

    Why downtime?

You do a parallel installation of the new version. Migrate a test DB und when all is ready you upgrade the productive DB and
work on with the new environment.

    Best wishes
