Whats the purpose of NAS Service? (2013)

Hi Guys,
This might be a stupid question, but what is the purpose of the NAS service/server on NAV 2013? I just set up a job queue, that I am simply running as a user. I started the queue and its is right now creating entries in a very simple table every minute. So why would I want to involve the NAS service?
