Inventory Closing Periods

Hello everyone!
I've been looking through forums and Google for an answer but couldn't find any, so here I am.
Could anyone explain to me the impact of not closing the inventory on a monthly basis, but doing it yearly instead ? Is that something which could in the end result in performance issues ?
