    I have the same problem. It is possible to run both versions of NAV simultaneously, only the administration tool doesn't work anymore for NAV2013.
    And of course you cannot administor the NAV2013 services with the new release. Let's hope that MS realises in one of the next releases that there are a few developers working on NAV...

    I have the same problem.
    Luckily you can restart the existing 2013 services from "Services" (not the Administration MMC). The powershell seems to be still operational, I could query the existing services, so in theory you probably could use that to add and remove instances, though I have not tried it.

    The other problem is trying to run an object in 2013, it tries execute through 2013R2. So you can't run tables or any of the objects directly any more. :x
    The client version does not match the server version. You can only connect to a server with a matching version.
    Client version: 7.1.35473.0
    Server version: 7.0.33781.0
    So basically you can run side-by-side, but you just increased your workload, since it is more cumbersome to the same things.

    Hi g_dreyer,

    The temporary solution (I guess) for this problem:

    Is make two Windows Registry Files, one for NAV 2013 and the second for NAV 2013 R2, and choose one of them depending of version you're working on.

    NAV 2013_CommandShell.reg
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DYNAMICSNAV]
    @="Dynamics NAV Protocol"
    "URL Protocol"=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DYNAMICSNAV\DefaultIcon]
    @="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\\70\\RoleTailored Client\\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Client.exe,0"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DYNAMICSNAV\Shell]
    @=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DYNAMICSNAV\Shell\Open]
    @=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DYNAMICSNAV\Shell\Open\Command]
    @="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\\70\\RoleTailored Client\\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Client.exe -protocolhandler \"%1\""

    NAV 2013 R2_CommandShell.reg
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DYNAMICSNAV]
    @="Dynamics NAV Protocol"
    "URL Protocol"=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DYNAMICSNAV\DefaultIcon]
    @="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\\71\\RoleTailored Client\\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Client.exe,0"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DYNAMICSNAV\Shell]
    @=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DYNAMICSNAV\Shell\Open]
    @=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DYNAMICSNAV\Shell\Open\Command]
    @="C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\\71\\RoleTailored Client\\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Client.exe -protocolhandler \"%1\""

    After installing NAV 2013 R2 I've got a different problem, I can only run one object one time in NAV 2013 using object designer. :cry:

    Greetings.

    Changing the registry helped for me (after uninstalling R2), but now I have another small problem: each time I run something from the dev environment a new instance of the RTC is started.
    Does anyone know how I can change this ? Probably some registry setting...

    Hi Guys,

    I was getting the same error after installing NAV 2013 R2 on same machine where NAV 2013 was there.

    But after Repairing NAV 2013, i can do all with NAV Administration Tool for both the version.

    Go to NAV2013 Software and run Setup.exe
    You will see 3 options as
    Add/remove components
        Repair
        Uninstall

    Press Repair

    Are you opening from menu or running any object from Development Environment.

    It must be trying to open the default link which you have closed before.
    You can press ok and select the right url in server.

    Well, installed and run into troubles! i managed to fiddle wit registry to allow to run objects straight from object designer for 2013 and 2013R2, but it run whatever object only once! So for example - run report, rtc will open, report run. then go back to dev environment and run again - nothing happens until you close RTC client...

    Frustrating! The product itself is just brilliant for first look, but this small issues really pain in the back!

    For the NAV Administration try to change register as following.

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PowerShell\1\PowerShellSnapIns\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Management]
    "ApplicationBase"="D:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\\70\\Service\\"
    "AssemblyName"="Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Management, Version=7.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"
    "Description"="Microsoft Dynamics Nav Management Snap-in"
    "ModuleName"="D:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\\70\\Service\\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Management.dll"
    "PowerShellVersion"="2.0"
    "Vendor"="Microsoft Corporation"
    "Version"="7.0.0.0"

    @daniellee thanks for the registry settings, I have played around with it and with the following it will work form 2013 and 2013R2:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PowerShell\1\PowerShellSnapIns]

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PowerShell\1\PowerShellSnapIns\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Management]
    "ApplicationBase"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\\70\\Service\\"
    "AssemblyName"="Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Management, Version=7.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"
    "Description"="Microsoft Dynamics Nav Management Snap-in"
    "ModuleName"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\\70\\Service\\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Management.dll"
    "PowerShellVersion"="2.0"
    "Vendor"="Microsoft Corporation"
    "Version"="7.0.0.0"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\PowerShell\1\PowerShellSnapIns\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Management, Version=7.1.0.0]
    "ApplicationBase"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\\71\\Service\\"
    "AssemblyName"="Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Management, Version=7.1.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31BF3856AD364E35"
    "Description"="Microsoft Dynamics Nav Management Snap-in"
    "ModuleName"="C:\\Program Files\\Microsoft Dynamics NAV\\71\\Service\\Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Management.dll"
    "PowerShellVersion"="2.0"
    "Vendor"="Microsoft Corporation"
    "Version"="7.1.0.0"

    Now if there was only a good solid solution for the DYNAMICSNAV protocol handler which will work for 6R2, 2013 and 2013R2 alltogether!

    I have installed both 2013 versions on same machine,repaired 2013,changed port of 2013 and both RTC started.

    Now will test further more, but this has given me confidence.

    So... There's still no option to run the NAV 2013 and NAV 2013 R2 clients on the same machine with debugger support, unless the registry is edited each time, correct? That's fine (well, not fine, but livable) when running on your own machine, but does a partner like ourselves no good when we have multiple consultants/developers working on a terminal services box to run NAV and work on multiple client databases. Plus our databases and service tiers are on separate machines...and the development environment for R2 must run on the same machine as the service tier, correct?

    I guess what i'm trying to clarify is whether the following is possible in any way:

    - to run the NAV 2013 R2 client on the same machine as the NAV 2013 client with full run object and debugger support
    - whether the NAV 2013 R2 development environment can run on a separate machine from the related NAV Server

    If not, this basically forces partners to set up a new dedicated machine for work on NAV 2013 R2 clients...and if this sort of co-existence issue continues going forward, we'll be looking at having a LOT of separate terminal servers running 3 or 4 years from now...which is a real headache if our people need to constantly switch servers to work on different clients/versions.

    As far as i know MS is aware of problem that you have to run dev env on middle tier machine, maybe they fix at some point. But, you of course can install middle tier for each developer on his machine. Middle tier on server is ass pain, as you got only 1 debugger session per service.

    So, if you put middle-tiers to developers machines - registry would not be a problem. Ok, when you working from outside and use a terminal server - it is a problem though.

    Apparently only way is hypervisor, and separate virtual machine for anyone who do develop from outside...

    Yeah, things become more complex, but product itself become better. Yes, it is not so simple as our beloved classic client - but it is life. Honestly, for web client i am ready to forgive everything, even RDLC, the product changed a lot and become better.

    Hi,

    In response to the many issues with running objects when 2 versions of NAV are installed I have submitted a change to the way that objects are run from C/SIDE.

    The change is to launch the Win Client directly from C/SIDE instead of using the dynamicsnav protocol handler. If C/SIDE finds the Win Client (Microsoft.Dynamics.Nav.Client.exe) in the current directory then it will launch the Win Client with the Hyperlink as the command line argument. If the Win Client cannot be launched then it will launch the hyperlink using the dynamicsnav protocol handler as previously.

    We plan to release the change in an upcoming Hotfix.

    Regards,

    David

    A step in the right direction... Are you guys working on anything to enable multiple versions of the debugger to co-exist and run without registry changes?
