Display progress bar or spinner when calling webservices

Hello all,
I would like to present some kind of progress indicator in NAV2013 when calling external webservices. The standard dialog assumes some way of knowing the progress and offers a cancel button. But when calling webservices, I do not know how long it will take and the process cannot be aborted.
Is there some kind of best practice to deal with this situation? I think a spinner would be the best solution. Can it be done? Any idea how? Thanks.
