Make field editable depending on what mode page is in

Hi!
I have a page with a field on it that's tied to an unlimited length text variable name tBody. I want to make an email body editor with this. I'm already (somewhat) successfully writing and reading the contents of the tBody to and from a BLOB field on my record. The problem is that the field on the page is always editable, even when the Page is in View mode.
Is there a way I can toggle the editability of this field defending on what mode the page is in?
