Workaround to have charts 'listen' for individual records?

I am wondering if anyone has figured out a way to display a chart in a factbox which 'listens' to a single record. My goal is to create a factbox(es) which displays a chart, e.g. actual $ to budget $ for a Production Order. I would like to be able to add the factbox to the Released Production Order list page. When a user selects a specific row, the chart factbox would update and display information for that specific Production Order.

Any thoughts / examples would be appreciated.

I've done this with a custom chart addin, inspired by this article:

by using an addin i was able to build a flexible framework which suits any charting needs!
