Lost user personalization and Item notes

A client of ours has created a test company by backing up, renaming and restoring the live company.
Having done this, they found that their users had all reverted to the default role and lost their personalizations (I have looked in the "Page Data Personalization" table and can see data in there).
Now it appears that they have lost the "Notes" per item. We are facing the prospect of a restore to backup with subsequent loss of work.

Does anyone have any idea what might have happened ?
