Opening a .LOS file

The company i work with have recently aquired another company, which has a home made production/ERP system. The homemade system has data in files with the extension .LOS and I have no idea how to get into these files.
Does any of you gurus have a brilliant idea how to get into these?
I have tried opening it with Notepad, Word and Excell and all i get is gibberish and random characters mixed with the data.
I can forward the primary database file I need data from as it doesn't contain confidential information, but some tips on how to do this myself would be appreciated, as there are other files.
Thank you in advance if anyone has some pointers.

if it is "home made" then find one of the people who wrote it.David Machanick
