Using Global Dimension as G/L sub-code

Hello,
I'd like to ask your opinions and advices on this.

Our old financial system allowed using sub-code.
I believe NAV doesn't have that feature.
Our financial team is considering using a global dimension for sub-codes.

For example(very simplified example),

Current GLs in NAV:
70001 Office Supply
70002 Cleaning Supply
70003 Supply Other

Changing to:
70001 Supply(GL)
Global dimension value allowed for this GL code
01 Office Supply
02 Cleaning Supply
03 Other Supply

Is there any reason not to recommend this structure?
It seems global dimension is for something important to entire organization. On the other hand, sub-code is just category for some gl codes.
I am not sure if this approach is a common practice, and I don't have enough knowledge or experience to help them to make a good decision.

Thank you.

Yes, this technique can be used, but remember to select the 'Code Mandatory' for the '70001 Supply(GL)' account. This ensures that the users are forced to select a dimension when posting to this account.

Also, please keep in mind that if you want the details of these posted dimensions, you may need to create some analysis view / account schedules, to enable the users fetch the desired dimension wise details on the reports.

    Cheers!

You can use dimension. Actually, it depends on how many dimensions are you planning to use in the system. Using too many dimensions can effect the system's performance.

    Thank you for the advice.

We have been testing this, it seems working as we hoped, however, the issue is time to convert.
Basically, we have to re-structure the GL.
    Most time consuming parts are:
    1. Changing Global Dimension(17 hours)
General Ledger Setup -> Function -> Change Global Dimension
    2. Merging GL codes(40 hours)
Merging 2000 GL codes to 1000.
    I used this method http://www.mibuso.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=15580&start=0
FYI. We have 40 million records in GL Entry table

We cannot afford downtime any more than 9 hours, so, we are in dilemma.
Any thoughts or tricks to make the process faster?

How big is your database? What is the hardware you are running it on?

Thank you everyone for the help.
    We successfully changed GL codes.
We ended up renting some special hardware which bring 3 days process down to 14 hours.
    Changing Status to Solved.
