Variants in Manufacturing

I believe that earlier versions of Nav did not fully support the use of variants in Manufacturing. Is this still the case in version 2009 R2?
I can see that there is a Variant code on Production BOM lines and Production Order Components however do these carry through to posting, consumption through to Item Ledger Entries?
