Sales Order Applies-to Entry Help

We use average cost for our items. On some items we want specific cost for a sales order. So I create a sales order for a "special" product. It gets placed on a purchase order and reserved for that sales order. Its received. I then change the sales order applies-to entry to point to that positive entry. I get this error:

Applies-to Entry must not be filled out when reservations exist in Item Ledger Entry Entry No.='2893766'.

Is there another method to make sure that the shipment cost uses the cost from the receive entry or am I just doing it wrong?
