Credit memo posting date effecting source document date

Hi all,
if user created a credit memo document, posting date doesnt necessary have to follow source document posting date? if it doesnt follows what would happen? my understanding that as long as we use functions> get posted receipt line will do no implications on finance side is my presumptions right ?
