best way to administrate characteristics for items, customer

from my point of view there are 3 different ways to administrate chacteristics for items, customers, vendors..

- extend the standard tables with new fields
- use dimensions
- create a new table to handle these characteristics

Depends on what you need to do with it.

If it is a field that is used in a lot of places, best put it in the table.
If it is a dimension for analytical purposes, best use dimensions.
If it is a field that is only there because sometimes a user wants to take a look at it, use an extra table (the picture-field should have been like this).
