FieldReference occours error

Hi community,
I have a little problem since I havent ever worked with FieldReference.
An attribute type of text is defined and the value is 12345. When using this field it occurs an error that says "The expression text cannot be type-converted to a Integer value.
Is their any possibility to validate the data before using?
