When we try to open database with lower version this error appears..
make sure that you are trying to open with right NAV version..

But when I used backup restore from NAV no problem at all. So i think there are no compatibility issue NAV 5.1 (SP1) and SQL Server 2008 R2.
I think the problem is from backup 2008 database (using backup SQL 2008) and restore it to 2008 R2 (using restore SQL 2008 R2). From the SQL Server view there is no problem but from NAV view there is a problem.

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit (Ultimate Edition) and SQL Server 2008 R2 64 bit (Standard Edition)

2. Copy database files (mdf, ndf, log) to path accessible from SQL 2008 R2
3. Attach database to SQL 2008 R2
4. Change database version to 100
5. Transfer SQL logins from SQL 2008 to SQL 2008 R2
If u're using v.5 NAV client, do not forget to set trace 4616 flag on SQL 2008 R2 instance
I had working v. 4SP3 client on SQL 2008 R2 with trace flag
