4.00 Database Server on Windows 2000

I'm trying to install the 4.00 database server, but I'm getting some strange errors when connecting to the server:

The operating system returned the error (109):

The pipe has been ended.

I did some further investigation, and had some weird results.

Testscenario 1:
Native database server on Windows 2000 (port 2015)
client under Windows XP
Connection through windows auth. -- ERROR
Connection through database auth. -- SUCCESS

Testscenario 2:
Native database server on other Windows 2000 (port 2015)
client under Windows XP
Connection through windows auth. -- ERROR
Connection through database auth. -- SUCCESS

Testscenario 3:
Native database server on Windows XP (default port)
client under Windows XP
Connection through windows auth. -- SUCCESS
Connection through database auth. -- SUCCESS

Anybody got an explenation?
