Shipping and Receiving Item to Subcontractor

I have a routing where the component (Item A) is forward flushed when the Production Order is Released.
There are then several Internal Operations performed to Item A..
then there is a Subcontract Operation to Item A and once this is received back..
there is one further Internal Operation before output is completed (Item
I can produce the subcontract Purchase Order and understand that this is receiving a service and automatically records the output against the subcontract operation when posted.
From the manual and other posts I have read it say you can have a picking operation before the Subcontract Operation. I have tried to create a pick from Source Document Consumption but the system doesn't produce anything. Can anyone explain how I set up this Picking Operation against the Routing and how I then produce the Picking Document from the Production Order.
