If you are a Customer, Customer Source has documents on how the US Finance functionality works. Same with Partner on Partner Source. Have you checked the online help (F1)?

Yes you can find help in F1.
In there go to General Ledger -> Using Bank Accounts ->Reconciling Bank Accounts.

Checked Customer/PartnerSource, simply trying to press F1 would have yielded the answer. We're here to offer help in recommendations.
