Hello All

we are being advised that we should move from a nav 2009 classic install to Nav 2009 RTC installation, we were just wondering what the major differences would be, the main thing we want t know is that on classic we can modify certain code to manipulate data and reporting and from what i have been lead to belief this cannot be done at present in RTC.

Any advice or experiences greatly appreciated

many thanks

Mark

    1. Sleek GUI
    2. Ability to send notification to other users.
    3. Graphical Reporting
    4. 3-tier architecture, ensure the client will not require large resource
    5. Treemap & Timeline Inventory Control
    6. Graphical Cart
    7. Search Engine for pages (forms).
    8. Report Save as PDF and Excel
    9. etc.

    Hello,

from what I've seen, I'd say don't try to fix what's not broken. I am "designing" some reports which must run on both CC and RTC, and it's a major PITA. IMO, from the end-user point of view the customization gets nearly impossible to do. The process is non-intuitive, and you have to cope with visul studio for RDLC report design. And BTW, it's slower. If I wouldn't have to develop for it, I would avoid it like hell.

    with best regards

    Jens

There are performance advantages in the RTC. At least in theory the 3-tier should be better on large scale installations. But if you are running CC today and it's running on adequate hardware I think you will notice a performance decrease (with regards to the user interface response times at least) and while you can certainly customize pages on the RTC as Jens said you cannot expect a normal super user to be able to change a RTC report while that is entirely possible in the CC.

From a developer standpoint the RTC has been nothing but trouble so far. It's buggy and slow and a PITA. I am sure it will get better and I am also sure that for certain types of installations the RTC is way better than the CC. I just do not work with installations where the RTC is preferable.

Looking to the future the choice is clear. RTC is the way forward as MS is moving away from the CC in time.
    Best regards

That's assuming you want to upgrade. We still have clients using 2.0.

And unfortunately, MSFT will only support 2 recent version. And currently only NAV 5 upward. :(

Yeah.. In future version, you can forgot about Classic interface... And it will be based on .NET Framework no ? So you would be able to code your pages, reports, etc. In C# no ?

3.7B was already pretty bloated. Navision 2.0c was, in my opinion, the best version ever released. It is incredibly fast!

Totally agree! version 2.x had the least issues and was pretty quick. It still works on a Windows 7 box.....strangely version 3.xx doesn't!?
