I work as a lecturer at a university of applied sciences and we only use NAV2009 RTC as a learning subject, e.g. to illustrate ERP concepts to students.
At the moment we're using NAV2009 SP1 in 3-tier.
Some questions concerning a possible migration from SP1 to R2:
1) Is it advisable to upgrade to R2? When do you believe we can benefit of such a migration?
Is there an improvement in the performance?
2) What has to be upgraded? (RTC) Client, CClient, NAV Server, SQL Server?
Are the databases exactly the same for SP1 and R2?
Is this migration easy/will it take only a small time investment?
Can we update the existing environment easily?
Thanks for your input.

Recently I have upgraded SP1 to R2.
1. Obviously SP1 bugs will be fixed in R2
2. Databases are different for Sp1 and R2
so we need to upgrade both classic and RTC.
Yes, upgradation is easy and will take small time for object upgradation
and database upgradation depends upon the size of DB.
