Identfier in Item card

Can anyone tell me the practical use of Identifier code defined for in an item in its card. Item card --> Item Button --> Identifiers.

In this window, you can create a unique identifier for each item that you want warehouse employees to keep track of within the warehouse by using handheld devices. The item identifier can include the item number, the variant code and the unit of measure.

This table stores the unique codes that you give to each item for use in the automatic data capture system. The code indicates not only the item number, but also the unit of measure and the variant code, if any.

Thank u. I would appreciate a further clarification. Is it some thing like an alternative item code..something like a cross reference.
If so, in the purchase order we have provision to select the Cross ref No. but where do we have provision to select the Identifier? Which form?
